Most of us don’t need a reason to grab our morning cup of coffee, but scientists have provided us with justification. Coffee’s ability to improve our moods is not just a happy coincidence. Research has proven that caffeine affects our overall health in many ways.

Caffeine improves brain function

It’s no secret that coffee contains caffeine, which helps people perk up and pay attention. This effect can actually make you smarter. Caffeine travels to your brain, blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter and causes more neurons to fire. Basically, all those scientific words mean that caffeine increases energy, which improves your brain function, which leads to better reaction times, better moods and better function in general.

Caffeine boosts fat burning

Caffeine is a natural substance that’s been proven to boost fat burning in humans. This means that the caffeine in your coffee increases how fast you metabolize food and how quickly your body burns fat. Over time, the caffeine likely won’t have the same fat burning effects on regular coffee drinkers, but it’s certainly beneficial to a degree.

Caffeine improves workout performance

Caffeine’s ability to burn body fat isn’t connected to physical exercise, but you should consider working out after drinking coffee. The stimulating effects of caffeine increase your body’s adrenaline levels. This is the hormone that gets your body ready for physical exertion. Caffeine also makes fatty acids from fat tissues available to use as fuel. Combined, these effects improve your workout performance.

Coffee noticeably improves our moods as we start the day, but it might also be improving our health. Scientific research supports the nutritional benefits of coffee, so go ahead and refill your mug.

Coffee reduces risk for diseases

Other benefits of coffee include a reduced risk for diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and type II diabetes. None of these diseases have a cure, so it’s important to consider what steps you can take for prevention. The way caffeine affects neurons in your brain appears to work against Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Studies suggest coffee also lowers an individual’s risk for type II diabetes more than 20 percent.

Coffee is rich in antioxidants

Coffee contains an exceptionally high amount of antioxidants. Antioxidants support your overall health by removing oxidizing agents that could be potentially damaging. Usually, people consume antioxidants from fruits and vegetables, but coffee helps too. Scientists have found that for some people coffee is the main source of antioxidants, especially for individuals living in Western cultures.

Coffee noticeably improves our moods as we start the day, but it might also be improving our health. Scientific research supports the nutritional benefits of coffee, so go ahead and refill your mug. Be wary of how much cream and sugar you’re putting in, though. Coffee may have health benefits, but creamer does not.
